August Newsletter Ideas: 20 Ideas for What to Send Your List This Month

While we often think of August as the heart of summer, it’s really a month of transition. Sure it might be hot and humid for most of the month, but it also signals the end of the season – and you might even start to feel the dreaded back-to-school traffic slump before it’s all over. What better way to try and insulate yourself than by emailing your subscribers?

Ideas for Week 1 – August 1-7

The first week of August is a good time to re-commit to emailing your list on a regular basis – and there are lots of ideas that can inspire you if you’re creative.

For example, the first week of August is Simplify Your Life Week. While adding weekly emails to your to-do list isn’t simplifying, you could use this as an opportunity to share a tip you’ve learned about simplifying something in your niche – or ask how you could help simplify their lives within your area of expertise. (This is a great way to brainstorm or get feedback on product or service ideas you might have – I know we’re all looking for new revenue opportunities right now!

Similarly, the first Saturday in August (August 1st this year) is National Summit Day; the idea is focused on literal summits (mountains), but you could use it as a metaphorical example to open up a conversation with your subscribers about the mountains, hurdles, or summits you’re working to overcome – or to ask them what they’re feeling stuck with.

Lastly, August 5th is National Work Like a Dog Day, which may be how you’re feeling about your business (or emailing them consistently), so you could use that opportunity to share how it’s going for you and how you’re working through it.

Ideas for Week 2 – August 8-14

If you’re like me, you can easily stay committed to emailing twice in a row, so maybe you’re good to go with ideas for the second week in August. If you need other ideas, here are a few:

  • August 8th is National Dollar Day, so you might use that as an opportunity to pitch one of the products and services you offer. You wouldn’t necessarily call out the specific day in your email and messaging, but you could celebrate your own personal “National Dollar Day” by making a few!
  • That’s also International Cat Day, if talking about kitties – cute kitties, cats you love, or crazy cat antics and behaviors – might make sense for your audience.
  • There are two days of note on August 9th, depending on your audience: it’s both International Coworking Day (which could make sense if you talk about the business side of your blog at all) and Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples (again, this would be niche specific).

I think probably the best idea for emailing your audience this week could focus on National Lazy Day which is August 10th. Instead of – or perhaps in response to – last week’s email all about work and overcoming obstacles, you could talk about how to take a break, recharge, and come back more energized than ever (for whatever your niche might be!). As I’ve said before, I believe rest and breaks are super important and we often forget them as site owners.

(You could also use National Lazy Day as a framework for your email next week, if you forget to or skip emailing this week!)

Ideas for Week 3 – August 15-21

Okay, we’re halfway through August – you can stick to emailing each week, I believe in you! Here are some ideas for the third week of the month:

You could use the concept of National Roller Coaster Day (August 16th) to talk about the rollercoasters of your niche and/or business. We all have them as site owners – I promise your subscribers have them too!

August 16th is also National Tell A Joke Day, so you could keep it short and sweet with a niche-relevant joke. “I thought I saw an eye doctor in Alaska yesterday… But it was only an optical Aleutian.” Ba dum chh….

For another simple idea, August 19th is World Photography Day. You could use this as a prompt to share some of your photos related to your niche and/or ask your subscribers to share theirs in reply. While it’ll fill up your inbox, replies are one of the best ways to signal to email servers and inbox providers (like Gmail) that you’re not spam – that can help your deliverability score a bunch!

Ideas for Week 4 – August 22-28

In the last full week of August, I have one big idea, and a few backups for you:

August 23rd is Find Your Inner Nerd Day, and we all know there are ways to nerd out about our niches. Lean into this, sharing something that you nerd out about within your niche, and/or asking your audience to do the same. If you’re feeling stuck, you might look back at your spreadsheet of blog posts for one that you’re especially proud of but which doesn’t get a lot of love because it’s a little bit nerdy. For me, that might be the McKinley Park Hotel in Alaska, the Gates of London, or, well, anything on Space Tourism Guide or D&D Community.

Alternatively, here are some other ideas for this week:

  • August 25 – National Park Service Birthday (and a free park day!)
  • August 26 – National Dog Day (for you dog people, I guessssss…)
  • August 28 – Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day (for pet lovers of all kinds)

Maybe you can stretch your creative muscles to make one of these fit for your niche.

Additional August Newsletter Ideas

August has a few extra days, so you might need some additional ideas for a fifth newsletter. Here are two more ‘national days’ that might work:

  • August 30 – National Beach Day, to celebrate the end of summer, which might be a whole other topic you could focus on!
  • August 31 – National Eat Outside Day, perfect whether you’re in a family-related niche, focus on a local or travel destination, or cover food.

Additionally, some of these ideas I’ve shared for any given week just might not make sense for your audience. In that case, consider that August is National Wellness Month, Black Business Week, and – for most people – the start of the Back to School season. I’m sure you can come up with something that would be valuable to your audience and your business between those three.

That’s quite enough to inspire you to put together your weekly emails this month, dontcha think? Have any other questions about coming up with August newsletter ideas? Let me know in the comments below!
